Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We know parents have lots of questions about their child’s dental care, and we’re here to help! Below are some of the most common questions we receive, from when to schedule the first visit to what to do in a dental emergency. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to contact us—our team is happy to assist!

1. When should I schedule my child’s first dental appointment?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends scheduling your child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting. Early visits help establish healthy habits and prevent dental issues.

2. How often should my child visit the dentist?

Just like adults, children should see the dentist every six months for check-ups and cleanings. Some children with higher cavity risk may need more frequent visits.

3. What happens at my child’s first dental visit?

The first visit is gentle and educational! We’ll check your child’s teeth and gums, discuss oral hygiene habits, and answer any questions you have. Our goal is to make the visit fun and stress-free for both you and your child.

4. What if my child is nervous about the dentist?

It’s completely normal! Our team specializes in pediatric care and uses gentle, kid-friendly techniques to make visits comfortable. We also offer tell-show-do techniques and distraction methods to help ease anxiety.

5. What should I do if my child has a dental emergency?

Call us immediately! We offer same-day appointments for urgent dental needs, including toothaches, knocked-out teeth, swelling, and broken teeth. The sooner we see your child, the better we can help.

6. Does my child need fluoride treatments?

Fluoride strengthens teeth and helps prevent cavities. We assess each child’s risk for decay and may recommend professional fluoride treatments to keep their enamel strong and healthy.

7. What’s the best way to prevent cavities in children?

Good oral hygiene, a healthy diet, and regular dental check-ups are key! Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, limit sugary snacks, and consider sealants or fluoride treatments for extra protection.

8. What are dental sealants, and does my child need them?

Sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth to prevent cavities. They are painless, quick to apply, and highly effective, especially for children prone to decay.

9. What are my options if my child needs a filling or crown?

We offer tooth-colored fillings for small cavities and stainless steel or white crowns for more extensive decay or damage. We’ll discuss the best option based on your child’s needs.

10. Do you offer sedation or anesthesia for dental treatment?

Yes! For children with severe dental anxiety, special needs, or extensive treatment needs, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas), IV sedation, and general anesthesia to ensure a safe, comfortable experience.
