Tooth Extractions:

When and Why They’re Needed

While baby teeth are meant to fall out naturally, sometimes an extraction is necessary to protect your child’s oral health. Our goal is always to preserve teeth when possible, but in certain cases, removing a primary tooth is the best option.

When is a Primary Tooth Extraction Needed?

  • Severe Decay or Infection – If a baby tooth is too damaged to be restored with a filling or crown, removal may be the safest option to prevent pain and further infection.

  • Trauma or Injury – A badly broken or dislodged tooth may need to be extracted if it cannot be repaired.

  • Overcrowding – Sometimes, baby teeth don’t fall out on schedule, causing crowding or preventing permanent teeth from coming in correctly.

  • Impacted or Stubborn Baby Teeth – If a primary tooth refuses to budge and blocks the adult tooth underneath, extraction can help guide proper alignment.

  • Orthodontic Reasons – In some cases, baby teeth may need to be removed as part of an orthodontic plan to ensure the best spacing and alignment for permanent teeth.

What to Expect

We use gentle techniques and offer sedation options to ensure your child’s comfort during the procedure. After the extraction, we provide guidance on healing, pain management, and whether a space maintainer is needed to keep the surrounding teeth in place until the permanent tooth erupts.

If you have concerns about your child’s teeth, our team is here to help. We’ll assess their dental health and recommend the best course of action for a healthy, happy smile!
